Cookie Policy

Version 3.2, last updated December 2023 (see the previous cookie policy here)

This policy explains how we use cookies and similar technologies when you use the following.

  • Our consumer services

Consumer services are the sites and apps we own and operate, including our Yahoo and AOL sites and apps.

  • Other companies' sites and apps that use our digital advertising services

Our digital advertising services are our platforms that help advertisers reach users, help us and our publishers sell advertising space, and help users see ads that are relevant to them.

In this cookie policy, our consumer services and digital advertising services are referred to together as ‘our services’.

We use cookies and similar technologies to collect personal information. Our privacy policy explains how and why we process personal information. It also explains how you can review and update your cookie preferences through your privacy controls.

We are committed to respecting your privacy and making sure your personal information is processed securely.

We use cookies and similar technologies such as web storage and advertising identifiers.

  1. Cookies

Cookies are small pieces of information that are stored on your device when you visit a site or use an app. The website or app decides the name of cookies, what information they contain, and how long they are kept on your device.

The types of information we may store in cookies include:

    • your preferences for how a site or app works
    • your preferences for how your information is used by the site or app (for example, your privacy choices)
    • information that the site or app needs to work properly (for example, we might store your location in a cookie in our weather app so that the app can show you a local weather forecast)
    • information to improve the performance of the site or app that you are using
    • unique identifiers which allow us to identify your browser or device, and
    • encrypted or one-way cryptographic hashes of personal information such as email addresses, phone numbers, and account identifiers.
  2. Web storage

Web storage is a group of technologies that work in a similar way to cookies. They allow sites and apps to store information in your browser.

We store the same types of information using web storage as we do with cookies.

  3. Advertising identifiers

Advertising identifiers uniquely identify your mobile devices and connected TVs.

When you use an app on your mobile device or your connected TV, the app will access your advertising identifiers and use it for various purposes, including to provide and measure the personalised ads you see.

    Examples of advertising identifiers include:

    • advertising identifiers on Android devices
    • identifier for advertisers (IDFA) on iOS devices, and
    • Microsoft's advertising identifiers on devices running Windows.

We use cookies and similar technologies for a range of purposes.

3. Third party cookies on our consumer services

If they have your consent, our partners (such as our advertising partners and content providers) use their own cookies and similar technologies (often referred to as third-party cookies) on our consumer services. This means that when you use our consumer services, these third parties will also collect information from your browser and your devices. These cookies may be used for different purposes, including to show you advertising and personalised content.

You can withdraw your consent for our partners to use their cookies and similar technologies on our consumer services through your privacy controls.

You can control how we and our partners use cookies and similar technologies through your privacy controls. Your device and browser also provide you with settings which you can use to control how cookies and similar technologies are stored on your device.

Click on + on the right to learn more.

  1. Using the controls we provide

When you use our services, we give you control over whether or not we and our partners can use cookies and similar technologies to process your personal information for certain purposes.

You can withdraw your consent for how we use cookies for certain purposes through your privacy controls by selecting the brand you want to change the settings for. If you have an account for that brand, click ‘Sign In’ in the top right-hand corner to make sure the choices you make are saved to your account.

  2. Cookies which are strictly necessary

We use cookies and similar technologies that are strictly necessary for providing, maintaining and protecting our services and our users' information. You cannot control our use of cookies for these purposes. In the Cookie information section we have shown which cookies are strictly necessary.

  3. Using the controls provided by your device or browser

    • On mobile devices – phones and tablets

Your mobile device's operating system may let you choose how your device's advertising identifiers can be used for certain types of advertising. You should check the instructions provided by your mobile device’s manufacturer. The instructions are typically available through 'settings'.

For devices running iOS 16, to limit interest-based ads go to Settings > Privacy & Security > Tracking > Allow Apps to Request to Track.

For Android devices, to limit interest-based ads go to Settings > Google services > Ads, then turn on 'Opt out of Ads Personalization'.

Please note that your device’s settings may vary by version and may change in future versions.

    • On your laptop or desktop

You can configure your browser settings to control how it allows sites to use cookies. Some features on our consumer services, including being able to sign into your email account, may not work properly if you disable cookies in your browser.

      Clearing browser cookies or history

Clearing your browser’s cache (a tool used by your internet browser to speed up the page-loading process), cookies and search history will remove our cookies and similar technologies from your browser. However, this will not prevent tracking that we perform using other technologies which do not rely on information stored on your devices, and will not prevent our cookies from being set again in the future. Please use your privacy controls to make your privacy choices.

      Using ad and cookie blockers

If you use browser settings to block cookies, or you use browser extensions, plug-ins and add-ons which block cookies, we and our partners may not be able to remember your privacy choices. This is because online businesses often save privacy choices in cookies.

    • Smart or connected devices

Smart or connected devices, such as smart TVs, may offer their own privacy controls. If they don’t offer controls, or the controls offered are not supported by our digital advertising services we can only respect the choices you make using your privacy controls if we can associate your choice with the device you are using.

The following tables list the cookies that we use on our consumer services and digital advertising services and how long they last after they are set. Each time you visit a site or app where we use cookies, we may update our cookies and extend how long they last.

You may see cookies listed in more than one of the tables below because some cookies are used for more than one purpose.
